Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologist and science writer, is no stranger to controversy and often receives negative criticism. In response, he published a video a few years ago in which he reads various hate emails that he had received. More recently, he published a followup where he reads even more hate mail, and it is quite entertaining.
Dawkins is a prominent public speaker and popularizer of science, having written a collection of books on science – such as The Blind Watchmaker, Climbing Mount Improbable, The Selfish Gene, among others – as well as appeared in several documentaries and debates. He is also credited with the invention of the word “meme.”
Dawkins is an accomplished biologist and public advocate of science, having served as the Oxford Professor of Public Understanding of Science from ’95 – ’08. Now, Dawkins’ career centers around combatting creationism and intelligent design, as well as advocating atheism. This was solidified by his 2006 book The God Delusion, and the founding of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
An admitted atheist, Dawkins now is the center of much controversy as his career has shifted to combatting pseudoscience. Unafraid to engage touchy topics, it is not uncommon for him to receive touchy responses. Dawkins takes it all in good fun with the above video where he reads his critic’s letters. Hopefully it will add a bit of humor to your day.
